Holly J. Humphrey, MD, MACP
Holly J. Humphrey, MD, MACP, became the eighth president of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation in July 2018. Immediately prior to her appointment as President, she served for 15 years as the Ralph W. Gerard Professor in Medicine and Dean for Medical Education at the University of Chicago. In this role, she oversaw undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education at the Pritzker School of Medicine.
While serving as Dean for Medical Education, Dr. Humphrey launched numerous programs, including the Roadmap to Professionalism initiative to support and enhance the highest professional standards in the learning environment. She also led a major curriculum reform effort entitled The Pritzker Initiative: A Curriculum for the 21st Century. She is the editor of Mentoring in Academic Medicine (2010) and is the author of numerous peer-reviewed publications on issues related to medical education. Her vision for medical education as a discipline worthy of scholarship led to creating the MERITS fellowship program in medical education open to residents, nurses, and faculty, and she supported two institution-wide initiatives in interprofessional learning.
Dr. Humphrey established the Pritzker Advising and Mentoring Societies to support students and the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators to support faculty. She is the co-founder of the Bowman Society, which explores issues of health care disparities and provides mentoring for minority students, residents, and faculty. She also oversaw the development of new pipeline programs for under-represented minority students interested in careers in medicine. Most recently, she founded Pritzker’s Identity and Inclusion Initiative (i2i), a collaborative faculty/student committee that promotes an inclusive learning environment and respectful and effective communication with diverse patients and colleagues around issues of identity.
An honors graduate of Pritzker, Dr. Humphrey completed her internal medicine residency, pulmonary and critical care fellowship and Chief Residency all in the department of medicine at the University of Chicago. Her 14-year tenure as Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program created the foundation for her medical education career.
Dr. Humphrey is a national leader in medical education and serves on the Board of Directors for the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. She is Chair Emeritus of the American Board of Internal Medicine, immediate past chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation, and a past President of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM). She serves on the Boards of Directors for both Alpha Omega Alpha and the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence. Awards and honors are many and include the Dema C. Daley Founders Award from APDIM and selection as a Master by the American College of Physicians. Crain’s Chicago Business featured her as one of their “Women to Watch” and the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago honored her as the Outstanding Leader in the Professions. The University of Chicago’s Alumni Association honored her with a Distinguished Service Award. Her teaching honors and awards are many and include her selection by graduating Pritzker students more than 25 times as a favorite faculty teacher.
Peter Goodwin, MBA
Chief Operating Officer and Treasurer
Peter Goodwin is Chief Operating Officer and Treasurer of Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. In this role, Peter oversees the Foundation’s investments, finances, communications, and operations, and serves as secretary to the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Peter has spent nearly 30 years working as a professional in the non-profit sector. After serving as a hospital administrator at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, he joined the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) as a financial analyst in 1984. With more than two decades of experience at RWJF, he served as financial officer, and in the senior leadership positions of vice president for financial monitoring, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, and Vice President for National Program Affairs. He also planned and directed the renovation and expansion of RWJF’s headquarters in Princeton.
During his tenure at RWJF, he championed and implemented a number of quality improvement activities in the areas of accounting, information technology, grantee audits, mission related investing, and grant competitions. As a 15 year member of RWJF’s executive team, he provided regular trusted advice to two CEOs and heads of Fortune 500 companies, university presidents, nonprofit leaders and senior government officials.
Mr. Goodwin holds an undergraduate degree from Boston College and an MBA from The City University of New York, Baruch College. He is active in both national and local leadership roles in the nonprofit sector. He served for two terms on the Board of Directors of Grantmakers in Health, during which he also served as Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee. For the last fifteen years he has served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Sikora Center, Camden New Jersey. Sikora Center is an outpatient treatment facility for substance abusing women. Peter is a fellow in Leadership New Jersey, a statewide program to identify and connect leaders in government and the nonprofit and business communities.
Stephen C. Schoenbaum, MD, MPH
Special Advisor to the President
Since the beginning of 2011, Dr. Schoenbaum has been Special Advisor to the President of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.
From 2000-2010, Dr. Schoenbaum was Executive Vice President for Programs at The Commonwealth Fund and Executive Director of its Commission on a High Performance Health System. The Fund is a national foundation that is devoted to improving coverage and access to health care and quality of care through its support of health services research and health policy analysis. The Commission on a High Performance Health System has, begun in 2005, been recommending policies that could improve the performance of the US health system with respect to coverage, access, quality, efficiency, and equity of care. As Executive Vice President, all of the grant-making programs of the Fund reported to Dr. Schoenbaum.
From 1993-1999, Dr. Schoenbaum was the medical director and then president of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care of New England, a mixed model HMO delivery system in Providence, RI. Prior to that, from 1981-1993, he was Deputy Medical Director at Harvard Community Health Plan in the Boston area, where his roles included developing specialty services, disease management programs, clinical guidelines, and enhancing the Plan’s computerized clinical information systems. Nationally, he also played a significant role in the development of HEDIS (the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set).
In his early career he was trained as an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control, became an infectious diseases specialist, and was a member of the Department of Medicine at what is now Brigham and Women’s Hospital and became Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. At Harvard Community Health Plan, he practiced general internal medicine.
He is currently a lecturer in the Department of Population Medicine (formerly Ambulatory Care and Prevention) at Harvard Medical School, a department he helped to found, and the author of over 170 professional publications. He was vice-chairman of the board of the Picker Institute; former president of the board of the American College of Physician Executives; and he is a longstanding member, now chair, of the International Advisory Committee to the Joyce and Irving Goldman Medical School, Ben Gurion University, Beer Sheva, Israel. He is also an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
Yasmine R. Legendre, MPA
Yasmine R. Legendre is Program Associate of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. In this role, she oversees the Foundation’s conferences and publications, conducts research, disseminates program results, and works with grantees and key stakeholders to align their work with the Foundation’s goals and objectives.
Ms. Legendre has worked in different elements of health care focused on improving the way care is delivered and how people access services. Most recently, Ms. Legendre worked as a policy analyst for the Diabetes Campaign at the New York State Health Foundation. There she analyzed Medicaid reimbursement policy for people with pre-diabetes and diabetes. She co-wrote a policy brief outlining recommendations to support the certified diabetes educator workforce and increase access to diabetes self-management services in New York. Ms. Legendre also worked on formally establishing community health workers as part of the health care team that can provide diabetes self-management services, culminating in a statewide conference outlining recommendations to support the scope of practice, training, and financing of the workforce. Prior to that, Ms. Legendre worked at the New York City Office of Management and Budget overseeing the Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) expense budget and monitoring Medicaid policy and legislative actions that affected HHC. Ms. Legendre has held positions with both the Greater New York Hospital Association Foundation and the NYU Langone Medical Center helping low-income individuals access needed health and social services.
Ms. Legendre has a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Cornell University and a Master of Public Administration with a Health Policy and Management specialization from New York University Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service.
